So what to write about compilation records? This stuff always is hard to review, but I'll try it. This is the fourth output of Rise Or Rust Records a small but constantly growing label from Graz in Austria. I can imagine that the idea behind is, to promote the Austrian Hardcore and Punkrock scene, but´in some way I got the feeling, that mainly artists are featured that are friends or supporters of the Grazian scene. Ok, I donít know what the points were/are a band has to fullfill to get featured. So I don't know - I don't care. The whole artwork is done in a kind of nice but also typicall way. I mean the idea is cool I like it in some ways. But why they did it with this fucking papercase? I know, that there aren't that big differences between the costs for a papercase and a jewel case, but a paper case (NOT a digipack) looks some kind of low budget. That is the only thing I don't understand. The music: well the sound is mainly ok - more or less better. The bands: how I said, there are many bands featured on this record. All in all 21 Bands with one song each and two bonus videos. I don't want to list all the bands, which are featured, but just some examples: Jan feat. UDSSR, Red Lights Flash, Cromit, Bounz The Ball, Springy Pinestix, Beatbrats, Anti Maniax, Once Tasted Life and so on. You can there are many different styles of music and bands, what makes this one some kind of funny to listened to.

Einen netten Ueberblick über zeitgenössische Gitarrenmusik vom Schnitzel nebenan bieten Rise or Rust Records mit ihrer Compilation Schubumkehr. 21 Songs, die das ganze Spektrum von Ska über Punk und von HC bis zu New Metal abdecken. Dass man sich bei einer solchen Vielfalt nicht mit jedem Song 100 % einverstanden geben kann, versteht sich dabei für jeden Mensch, der nicht völlig unkritisch dastehen will. Wer das Zeug hat, seinen Namen auch über die österreichischen Grenzen hinaus zu exportieren, steht aber bald schon mal fest. Es sind jene Bands, welche man zumindest vom Hören-Sagen schon kennt. Gemeint wären dabei , ANTI MANIAX, BEATBRATS, JAN FEAT. UDSSR, SICK OF SILENCE oder BOUNZ THE BALL. Diese aus verschiedenen Genres stammenden Combos reflektieren eine äusserst talentierte Underground-Szene aus Oesterreich. Als Neuentdeckung abstempfeln hingegen kann ich höchstens SADIRRITY, die mit ihrem Song "Dust and shadows" schon bald an Türen von angesagten Screamo-Labels klopfen dürfen. Der Rest reicht von 08/15 bis zum Prädikät "kann man drüberskippen". Schade, dass das Booklet so wenig Informationen zu den Bands liefert. Wo wir schon dabei sind: stammt dieses Artwork aus einem Comic von Isnogud? Wie dem auch sei, die wahren Perlen aus Austria wollte man uns hier vorenthalten, dass die Oesis neben gut Ski fahren auch gut Musik machen können, wird aber dennoch auf "Schubumkehr" unter Beweis gestellt.

Not quite sure what ‘Schubumkehr’ means. I think ‘Schum’ means ‘push’ in German, but I can only guess what ‘Bumkehr’ means. Whatever. This compilation has been put together by Austria’s Rise or Rust label as a statement for peace in the ongoing Iraqi crisis, bringing together a cross-section of bands from Austria’s punk rock community and urging you to listen, think and shout out loud the words of HG Wells: ‘If we don’t end war, war will end us’. I think it was Gandhi who said something similar - ‘an eye for an eye will make the world blind’. Well, this compilation serves as a brilliant reminder that the punk rock scene will not just sit back and watch events unfold, but actually rise up and voice its concerns. 21 bands are included here (including two bonus videos from scene faves Red Lights Flash and Cromit) and reflect mainland Europe’s proclivity for rougher, hard-edged hardcore punk styles. Most of these bands I’ve never heard of before but stand out tracks can be heard from the ultra-political Sick Of Silence, the ‘hey hey! Let’s go!’ punk chants of Rotten Rooters, the churning hardcore heaviness of Endogen, the bratty punk beats of Beatbrats, the Jimmy Eat World stadium rock of Cromit, and of course Household Name acts Red Lights Flash and Antimaniax. A window into the current Austrian punk rock scene this compilation is essential for anyone interested in what our punk brothers across the channel are up to.

Das Jahr 2003 war wohl das wichtigste Jahr für Rise or Rust Records, denn die sie waren voller Ideen und die Bands warteten nur auf so eine Chance. Schnell war dieser Moment gekommen und die Compilation Schubumkehr wurde produziert. Auf Schubumkehr sind 21 nationale Bands vertreten, darunter sehr bekannte wie Surfaholics, Bounz the Ball, Once tasted Life oder Anti Maniax. Wenn sich jetzt einer denkt, so was hör ich doch gar nicht, dann stimmt das nicht ganz. Schubumkehr bietet eine große Palette von Musikstilen an und da ist einfach für jeden was dabei. Ob nun Hardcore, Punk oder Ska; die Bands überzeugen auf jeden Fall eine ganze Stunde lang mit einer großartigen Songauswahl. Abchillen, Abrocken, Abfeiern – alles ist möglich mit dieser Compilation
